Vilamoura Golf Club (Old course)
Golf is an outdoor sport, originated from Scotland and has been played for at least five centuries in the British Isles. Golf is played on a tract of land known as the course which consists of a series of holes or cups. Most golf courses usually consist of nine or eighteen holes. There are several types of golf courses namely Parkland, Links, Heathland, Desert, Browns, Sand, Snow, Par3 and Executive. The Old Course, former Vilamoura I course, built in 1969, is Vilamoura eldest and most famous course, the recent upgrading in 1996 and modernization managed by Hawtree and Sons have brought the Old Course up to a new level of excellence, enhancing the image that made it famous. The Old Course is ranked 37th among the Top 100 European courses by British magazine Golf World and was also highly scored by the Peugeot Golf Guide. Originally designed by Frank Pennink, the Parkland layout was outstandingly molded to the natural contouring of the terrain and seamlessly integrated into the surroundings. Running through a splendid umbrella pine grove, the fairways are densely tree lined and feature many dog legs, while the greens are rather small, especially on the shorter holes. On the outward nine, the first five holes are relatively straightforward, holes 6, 7 and 8 demands complete concentration and precision shot-making to avoid both trees and bunkers. On the inward nine, holes 10, 11 and 12 require length and accuracy off the tees while the following three holes afford some respite before the par-5 16th truly challenging hole. The tranquility of the course in a splendid wooded environment, the immaculate condition of tees, fairways and greens, and the strong individual character of each hole, ensured it was the first community in southern Europe to be granted the Green Globe award for its long term sustainable environmental practices. The Old Course has 18 holes measuring 6,254 meters or 6,842 yards for a Par and SSS, Standard Scratch Score of 73 from the championship tees. Only Soft spikes can be worn and Walking is allowed. Electric carts and Caddies are available. Their goal isn't just to make the green, it's to improve the quality of the game. They desire to exceed the needs and expectations of their guests, members and landlords by maintaining superior golf facilities and providing exceptional service at a great value.
