Vila Sol Golf & Country Club
Golf is an outdoor sport, originated from Scotland and has been played for at least five centuries in the British Isles. Golf is played on a tract of land known as the course which consists of a series of holes or cups. Most golf courses usually consist of nine or eighteen holes. There are several types of golf courses namely Parkland, Links, Heathland, Desert, Browns, Sand, Snow, Par3 and Executive. Established in 1991, Vila Sol Golf and Country Club’s golf courses were built in accordance with USGA, United States Golf Association, standards and comprises of three combinable nines of Prime, Challenge and Prestige. Designed by British architect Donald Steel, who likes to reduce earth moving to the minimum and preserve nature and the native vegetation, the layout cleverly used the undulating terrain and the surrounding woodlands to create a beautiful and challenging course. The Vila Sol championship course unfolds discreetly through the subdued wooded estate of a dense pine grove, also featuring oaks, almonds and fig tree, while the rich flora forms a thick and threatening rough. It is a typical inland golf course of the British school, testing the strategic skills of the golfer. Its narrow fairways strewn with lakes and bunkers demand accurate driving while the fast greens will stress putting skills and green reading. The green keeping of the course is paramount. It was built on sandy soil, which guarantee perfect playing conditions year round, while the sophisticated irrigation system provide a balanced distribution of the generous water resources and each hole on the course has been given the name of a bird or animal that can be seen regularly on the property. As one of the best in Europe, it has already been the venue of the Portuguese Open twice and received the Green Flag in 1996 from the European Golf Association for the high standard of its environmental ecological management. This 27 Hole Course measures 3,241, 3,094 and 3,079 meters for the Prime, Challenge and Prestige nines from the championship tees, respectively. Walking is allowed with Soft spikes only and Electric carts and Caddies are available. Their goal isn't just to make the green, it's to improve the quality of the game. They desire to exceed the needs and expectations of their guests, members and landlords by maintaining superior golf facilities and providing exceptional service at a great value.
