The San Roque Club (Old course)
Golf is an outdoor sport where player as an individual or from varied teams strike a ball targeting a hole using various clubs. This game does not have any fixed standard playing area, but an ideal measurement can be decided as per the availability of space and number of players involved. The game basically originated from Scotland and has been played for at least five centuries in the British Isles. Although often viewed as an elite pastime, golf is now becoming an increasingly popular sport across all sections of society. The San Roque Club was established in 1990 and designed by Architect Tony Jacklin and Dave Thomas with 36 holes. The San Roque Club and its neighbour Alcaidesa links are both located on the southern edge of the renowned Sotogrande Estate. Sotogrande boasts four golf clubs totalling 99 holes, the world famous Valderrama, venue of the 1997 Ryder Cup and Sotogrande, both designed by the master Robert Trent Jones Senior and ranked amongst the top courses in the world, as well as Dave Thomas' layouts at Almenara and La Canada. This par 72 course has 18 holes measuring 6,440 meters or 7,155 yards with a slope gradient of 131 for a standard scratch score of 74.1 from the championship tees. The original old course at The San Roque Club was designed by British and Marbella based architect Dave Thomas, with the collaboration of Tony Jacklin. The magnificent clubhouse lies at the heart of the resort, a beautiful restored traditional house, former home of the Domecq Sherry dynasty. The historic building surrounded by terraced gardens with pools and fountains, provides exceptional facilities for both resident hotel guests and golf visitors. The front nine holes wind through a cork oak forest, San Roque’s landmark, affording broad mountain views. The back nine is laid out across rolling hills, hampered by numerous water hazards and including vertiginous carries that will test the player’s judgment of distance to the limit. The closing holes include the resort’s shimmering lakes and the stately clubhouse, providing a valuable finish to a challenging course. At The San Roque Club, their goal is not to merely make the green but also to improve the quality of the game. They focus to exceed the needs and expectations of their members, guests and landlords by maintaining superior golf facilities and providing exceptional service at a great value.
