Royal Antwerp Golf Club
Golf is an outdoor sport, originated from Scotland and has been played for at least five centuries in the British Isles. Golf is played on a tract of land known as the course which consists of a series of holes or cups. Most golf courses usually consist of nine or eighteen holes. There are several types of golf courses namely Parkland, Links, Heathland, Desert, Browns, Sand, Snow, Par3 and Executive. Royal Antwerp is one of the oldest clubs in Continental Europe, the present course was only laid out in 1913 by Willie Park Junior. This splendid golf facility nestles amidst densely wooded moors between the Dutch border and the harbour and diamond town of Antwerp, hometown of Rubens. A founding member of the Belgian Golf Federation, Royal Antwerp has been the venue of several Belgian Opens and it is ranked amongst Europe Top 100 courses. Royal Antwerp’s Main Course is a splendid classic design stretching between dense woods and heather over sandy moors, reminiscent of English heathland courses. Although not very long by modern standards, the course still shows a par 73 and a slope of 135 from the back tee and 130 from the men front tees. The Main Course is a combination of original holes laid out by Willie Park Jr. in 1913 and new holes designed by Tom Simpson in 1929, who also modernized Park’s original Woodland layout. The Architects’ imprint can be seen in the strategic sand bunkering with most of the fairways and greens being rather narrow and several have dog legs. There are natural hazards lined by mature birches and pine trees as well as heather, which will strongly penalize stray shots. This splendid natural surrounding and sandy soil provides for excellent playing conditions, even after heavy rain fall. Covering nearly 300 acres of wood and heath, the course has well separated fairways, giving a strong sense of privacy to the player. This course has 18 holes measuring 6,187 meters or 6,769 yards for a SSS, Standard Scratch Score of 73.1 from the championship tees. Walking is allowed on the course and Buggies are available. Their goal isn't just to make the green, it's to improve the quality of the game. They desire to exceed the needs and expectations of their guests, members and landlords by maintaining superior golf facilities and providing exceptional service at a great value.
