Penha Longa Golf & Resort

Golf is an outdoor sport where player as an individual or from varied teams strike a ball targeting a hole using various clubs. This game does not have any fixed standard playing area, but an ideal measurement can be decided as per the availability of space and number of players involved. The game basically originated from Scotland and has been played for at least five centuries in the British Isles. Although often viewed as an elite pastime, golf is now becoming an increasingly popular sport across all sections of society.

Penha Longa Golf & Resort was established in 1992 and designed by Architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. with 27 holes. Penha Longa Hotel & Golf Resort is set within 545 acres National Park on the southern slopes of the Sintra Mountain Range, in the renowned Estoril Golf Coast hinterland, west of Lisbon. Now under the management of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, the resort has undergone a wide restoration programme that has unveiled a new look to the property. Penha Longa now encompasses a luxurious hotel, a 19th century palace and two stunning golf courses.

This par 72 course has 18 holes measuring 6,290 meters or 6,879 yards for a standard scratch score of 73 from the championship tees. The Atlantico Course is a championship design that offers a wonderful challenge to golfers of all abilities as well spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and the ocean. The first and last three holes are laid out in a wooded valley with fairways lined by umbrella pines and large granite outcrops, while holes six to thirteen are built in the foothills offering wide views of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean in the background.

Its championship characteristics as well as it outstanding grooming contributed to its selection to play host to the Portuguese Open twice just two year after its inauguration. The Atlantico course is considered as one of the top fifty courses in Continental Europe as well. Sheltered from the northern winds by the Sintra's pink Granite Mountains and cooled in summer by the Atlantic breeze, Penha Longa enjoys a micro climate ideal to play golf. Walking is allowed on the course and electric carts and caddies are available.

Penha Longa's Atlantico course hosted numerous competitions, including the Portuguese Open on two occasions. Penha Longa enjoys a prime location between the seaside resorts of Estoril and Cascais, and the ancient town of Sintra.
