Madeira Santo da Serra Golf Club
Golf is an outdoor sport, originated from Scotland and has been played for at least five centuries in the British Isles. Golf is played on a tract of land known as the course which consists of a series of holes or cups. Most golf courses usually consist of nine or eighteen holes. There are several types of golf courses namely Parkland, Links, Heathland, Desert, Browns, Sand, Snow, Par3 and Executive. Madeira Santo da Serra Golf Club, established in 1937, is perched high up in the hills at an altitude of 500 meters overlooking the south-eastern coast of the island and the bay of Machico, amidst the dense Laurissilva primeval forest. The British introduced golf in Madeira and built their first nine hole course in 1937 at Santo da Serra, designed by the Miles Brothers and assisted by the Leacock and the Blandy families, The original course was redesigned and extended in 1991 by famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones Junior, who created a completely new and spectacular championship course. The three nines offer breathtaking views over the Atlantic Ocean and the rocky eastern coastline of the island at almost every turn, making a round of golf at Santo da Serra an unforgettable experience. This Championship course is mountain golf at its best, formed by the Desertas and Machico nines and has played host to the European PGA, Professional Golfers Association, opening tournament Madeira Open since 1993. Due to the course’s irregular and thick vegetative nature of the terrain, several holes are played over gaping ravines and feature quite a few breathtaking down hillers. In spite of the mountainous land, the course features generous fairways with wide landing area. The final score depends heavily upon the wind conditions and how fit golfers are. If not fit enough to walk the constant change elevations of the course, the use of a golf cart is strongly recommended. This Par 72 course has 18 holes measuring 6,092 meters or 6,665 yards with a 141 slope gradient for a SSS, Standard Scratch Score of 72.5 from the championship tees. Buggies and Caddies are available. Their goal isn't just to make the green, it's to improve the quality of the game. They desire to exceed the needs and expectations of their guests, members and landlords by maintaining superior golf facilities and providing exceptional service at a great value.
